How did you get involved with First Children’s?
After reading about First Children’s and looking at its website, I became intrigued with what First Children’s was doing. I was excited that they were in growth mode – significant in the world of nonprofits these days. I was also intrigued by the emphasis on quality and business. Nonprofits don’t necessarily understand that one of the essential keys to success is best business practices. I loved the beautiful little boy on the cover of the brochure – it was clear that First Children’s impacts the lives of children, especially lower income children.
Why is First Children’s important?
So many people are in depression, but as a state, Michigan has been depressed for a long time. So many of our children are not graduating from high school. Early education means better opportunities for our children -- for higher education. Good education means they can secure gainful employment. I am excited about First Children’s mission of guiding, encouraging and educating providers to have best business practices leading to quality.
What's your vision for First Children’s?
My vision is to have First Children’s Growth Fund statewide. We’re starting in Detroit, but other people are contacting me about having the opportunity to apply for the Growth Fund. I also want to grow our capital, so we can have a line item in our budget for small things centers need, such as financial software and training. My biggest dream would be for First Children’s to have its own innovative, green, nationally recognized child care center right here in Detroit.
What do you like to do when you aren't working on behalf of First Children’s?
I’m a mother of an eight year-old boy and a six year-old girl. Between basketball, soccer, piano and Spanish classes, I try to see friends. I also like to stimulate the economy one shoe purchase at a time. I enjoy trying new restaurants. I enjoy traveling.
What else would you like our readers to know about you and First Children’s?
I’m extremely excited to be a part of the First Children’s team. I feel invigorated by the knowledge and expertise and wealth of information. The aura of the team just illuminates what we can do to improve quality. We’re growing with passion. That’s very important.
